Bill targets corporate political spending

A bill that supporters say would help reduce the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision to allow unlimited campaign contributions by corporations is headed for the State House. The legislation, which will be filed today, is a direct response to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling in January that eliminated restrictions on the political speech of corporations. The bill sponsored by Senator Jamie Eldridge, an Acton Democrat, and Representatives Cory Atkins, a Concord Democrat, and William Straus, Democrat of Mattapoisett, will include increased disclosure and transparency requirements for corporate political spending. It also seeks to eliminate the influence of foreign entities in Massachusetts elections. (AP)
