Bella Tucker’s Brave Story

Bella Tucker’s Brave Story

State Rep. Cory Atkins, D-Concord, with Stacia Tucker McDermott, David Soucy and Donna Crowe supporting the Friends of Bella at the Chelmsford 4th of July parade

On Easter Sunday over the course of 12 hours, 8 year old Bella Tucker of Londonderry, NH and Chelmsford, MA went from enjoying an Easter Egg Hunt with her cousins to being med-flighted to Children’s Hospital Boston with a serious infection called Streptococcus Pneumoniae Sepsis with DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation). She remained in a coma for five days but through the efforts of all the doctors and nurses, survived the ordeal. However, she suffered extensive damage to all four limbs.

On April 27th, her life severely changed when Bella Tucker had quadruple amputation surgery. After multiple surgeries and nearly five months at Children’s Hospital, Bella was transfered to Spaulding Rehab in Boston on August 18th, 2010. She has a lust for life that just won’t quit and her strength, courage and incredible attitude have become an inspiration to everyone she meets.

Check back for updates on Bella’s recovery. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ

Who is FriendsofBella.org?

FriendsofBella.org was created by Bella Tucker’s dad Richard, aunts & uncles, and many supportive friends in Chelmsford, Massachusetts and beyond. Together, they hope to educate and raise awareness of limb loss while raising funds to help with Bella’s medical needs, living expenses, and home renovations.

Consider attending an upcoming fundraising event or DONATE ONLINE! Thank you and please keep Bella Tucker in your thoughts and prayers as she begins a long recovery process as a quadruple amputee.

Announcing the Acton Shuttle!

Announcing the Acton Shuttle!

Please spread the word

Please see www.minutevan.net for more information on the Rail Shuttle and the Dial-a-Ride. Both services are open for signers-up. Please tell your residents about them. The Dial-a-Ride is for Acton residents at this point, and the Rail Shuttle is for residents of all towns who use the train and want a certain parking space and a lift to the station. We are reserving half the spots for non-Acton-residents so please send along your train commuters. The cost for non-residents is less than the cost of using the meters at the station. I would appreciate all suggestions as to email lists, newspapers, and other PR outlets to get the word out. We would like to fill the first 22-space lot as soon as possible.

Thanks a lot.

TREASURER CAHILL AND THE MSBA ANNOUNCE NEW ROOF FOR CT

DOUGLAS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

MSBA will contribute up to $206,840 for the project

BOSTON, MA – State Treasurer Tim Cahill, Chairman of the Massachusetts School Building Authority

(“MSBA”), and Katherine Craven, MSBA Executive Director, today announced that the MSBA Board voted to approve a partial roof replacement for the CT Douglas Elementary School in Acton. The next step in the process is for the Town of Acton and the MSBA to enter into a Project Funding Agreement which will detail the project’s scope and budget and set forth the terms and conditions to which the Town of Acton will receive its grant from the

MSBA. The MSBA will be funding 43.85% of the project.

The MSBA will fund a partial roof replacement at CT Douglas Elementary School as part of the MSBA’s Green Repair Program. The main goals of the Green Repair Program are to improve learning environments for children and teachers, reduce energy use and generate cost savings for districts. The program will repair or replace roofs, windows and/or boilers in schools that are otherwise structurally, functionally and educationally sound.

“This program allows us to make much needed repairs and make Douglas Elementary more energy efficient, therefore reducing energy costs,” stated Treasurer Tim Cahill.

“The Green Repair Program will provide immediate benefits to communities like Acton by enabling us to both expedite and broaden the MSBA’s participation in repair projects, thereby maximizing the impact of this program,” stated Katherine Craven.

“Weatherizing our schools and investing in better, more energy-efficient infrastructure is a smart use of state funding. It will save the schools money down the line by reducing energy costs while also reducing our carbon emissions – a win-win situation. I’m pleased that the MSBA has initiated this new Green Repair Program, and excited to see Acton become one of the first school districts to take advantage of the program,” said State Senator Jamie Eldridge.

“Education is the backbone of our communities,” said Rep. Cory Atkins. “I am pleased that this collaboration between state and local governments will help the town of Acton to maintain its excellent public schools.”

National Health Reform: What Does This Mean for Massachusetts?

President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2009 — the federal health care reform bill — into law on March 23, 2010.

The purpose of the law is to provide accessible health care coverage for an estimated 32 million Americans who are currently uninsured, and it will help people who already have health insurance retain their coverage. Some of the law’s provisions are effective in 2010, while others will be phased in through 2020.

Massachusetts’ own health care reform law already includes some of these reforms, while others will mean changes for Massachusetts Health Insurers and consumers.

This alert lists some of the initial elements of national health reform and what they mean for Massachusetts residents.

BOSTON — The unemployment rate in Massachusetts dipped below 9 percent in August for the first time in a year, giving Gov. Deval Patrick an opening to boast while his opponents charged that the recovery has not been fast enough.

The new jobs data released by state officials yesterday shows that unemployment dropped from 9 percent in July to 8.8 percent in August, driven by private-sector growth totaling 4,000 new jobs.

Overall, the state added 2,100 new jobs.

Prescription Drug Takeback Program

With prescription drug abuse at record levels, individuals with substance use disorders are looking in as many medicine cabinets as possible – maybe even yours.  You can help.

On Saturday, September 25, 2010, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and its partners nationwide will operate collection sites throughout the Commonwealth where citizens can turn in their unused, unneeded, and expired prescription drug medications – no questions asked! This is a free, anonymous service that will help keep our homes safe and save lives.

Currently there are over 50 drop off sites in the Commonwealth, with additional locations being added daily.

Prescription drugs treat illness and alleviate pain, but they should only be used when prescribed by a doctor for a medical purpose. Unfortunately, these medications often end up in the wrong hands. More than 70% of people who abuse prescription medications say they get them from family or friends. Many users of street drugs like heroin start with abusing painkillers.

For more information and to find a collection site in your district, visit www.dea.gov.

MassCEC’s MassGREEN Initiative Announces 2nd Round of Weatherization Workshops

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) would like to notify you that a second round of weatherization workshops under the MassGREEN Initiative starts this month at Community Colleges around the state.

MassGREEN provides energy efficiency workforce training for individuals and contracting firms throughout the Commonwealth. Four Massachusetts Community Colleges will host the program’s second set of workforce training workshops. These workshops are designed for people with little or no background in weatherization concepts or practices, including entry-level workers and residential construction trades seeking to expand their knowledge and services in energy efficiency. Existing weatherization crews and contractors looking to refresh their skills are also encouraged to participate. Successful graduates of the course will be prepared to take the Building Performance Institute Installer exams for Air Sealing and Densepacking, which are up-to-date insulation techniques.

Grant programs available: New MassWorks Infrastructure Program

Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray today announced the MassWorks Infrastructure Program – a newly created one-stop shop for municipalities seeking public infrastructure funding to support job growth and long term, sustainable economic development. The MassWorks Infrastructure Program represents an administrative consolidation of six grant programs:

• Public Works Economic Development (PWED)

• Community Development Action Grant (CDAG)

• Growth District Initiative (GDI) Grants

• Massachusetts Opportunity Relocation and Expansion Program (MORE)

• Small Town Rural Assistance Program (STRAP)

• Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Grant Program.

The consolidated program offers municipal applicants a streamlined process to access state economic development grant programs. The program will provide a single application, a single solicitation schedule, and a single set of grant rules and reporting requirements.

The program will improve accountability and provide for more effective management of state resources. The Executive Office of Housing & Economic Development will oversee the MassWorks Infrastructure Program with input from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Executive Office of Administration and Finance.
