Comment Thank you for posting the letter from the DCR. I am a bit confused by item one where it refers to the creation of 2 new trails but only states that "the new trail will not be groomed". Which trail is that? I am wondering if it is the path that will run parallel to the groomed ski trail for 100'. If so I am concerned the walkers will take the path of least resistance and walk on the groomed ski trails. I still see no way of preventing pedestrian use of the groomed ski trails where there is dual usage. My concern is the possibility of an accident with a ski tip getting caught in a foot hole or a collision. The quality of the trail is of interest as well. I appreciate your taking the time to review this note. Thank You

Sounds like the issue of dogs on the trails is resolved at least for the time being. I was very upset to hear about it. There is only good skiing for about 8-10 weeks of each year, and finding a nice, relatively inexpensive place to rent skis and teach our kids about x-c skiing in a natural setting (i.e., not a golf course) is difficult. Tracked trails get quickly messed up if people or animals walk on them, and dogs tend to either rush at skiiers (scaring kids) or bark relentlessly and threateningly (not to mention the poop issue.) Dogs have plenty of places to go - but x-c skiiers do not! Thanks for continuing to support skiiers on this issue.

Thank you for your help in opening this issue up for public discussion!

As a skier and walker I have used both trails in winter. I found the walking trails to be very extensive. I wonder why anyone would need to use the ski trails for those few weeks when skiers are there. Is it an access issue for residents who abut the trail system and just want to walk out their doors and onto the trails?

It is pretty much impossible not to post hole through the ski trail if you are walking on it, which creates at the least an unpleasant surface, and sometimes a danger for skiers. Dogs would really compound the problem.

I am very interested in attending the public forum.

Thanks again for your help,
Liz Newell

Comment I want to thank you for taking on this issue. I am a cross country skier and have concerns about the dual usage of the groomed trails at Great Brook. I don't see how to prevent walkers and dogs from using the groomed part of the trails, signs or no signs. The result could not only be serious damage to the ski trails but possible injury with a tip getting caught in a boot hole or a collision. I hope we can prevail upon the DCR that the many more miles of trails in Carlisle and surrounding towns are enough for the walkers, that they don't need to endanger the 10 miles we skiers use for such a short season. Thank you for your help, Cathy Delaney Acton, MA

We appreciate that you have taken the time to address these concerns.

I am both a hiker and skier, I believe it would not be possible to have hikers and dogs share the ski trails. We hikers could be convinced to stay on parallel hiking paths, but would still have to cross ski trails at times. Dogs would be tougher to control. Footprints (canine or human) can make skiing almost impossible and would greatly accelerate melting. The snow season is already short and any reduction of trail quality would likely make continued operation of a ski concession untenable. (I certainly would no longer buy a season pass.)

Please work to maintain the current separation of skiers and hikers.
Thank you.

Can any of the programs be used to fund engineering planning required under the TIP program? With tight economic times, many comunities are reluctant to utalize Chapter 90 funds for engineering planning and are unable to secure municipal funding throught town meeting vote.

With construction work required to commence within 3 months of approval of the grant request, there should be time to complete designs within this time schedule for the smaller projects assuming Mass DOT can review and approve the design plans within 30 days of submittal.

For larger projects a relaxing of this requiorement will be necessary.

I thought voters made it very clear a couple of years ago that we do not want casinos in Massachusetts. I know our Govenor is pushing hard for it but he is not listening to the majority of voters who prefer to see Massachusetts capitalize on more noble industries which also provide jobs including biomedical, education, tourism, medical, fishing and hi tech.
